Raising motor

Took my Bass Tracker out for a test run Friday afternoon. It was the 1st time I had it out with the 25hp motor. It really suprised me. Jumped right up on plane and moved along pretty good. The only thing is, it was throwing one heck of a rooster tail. I think maybe the motor needed tilted down some. Another thing is, I think I need to raise the motor up some but dont know how to without buying a jack plate. Is there any cheaper alternatives? Im going to borrow the digicam from work tonight and snap some pics for you guys to look at. Maybe you can help me out. Thanks.

Rick

Re: Raising motor

Was it indeed a rooster tail or was it throwing water up the transom?

Re: Raising motor

Well, I guess it would be more like throwing water up the transom. It was spraying the side of the cowling pretty good.

Re: Raising motor

You are correct. The motor needs to come up.

Bob's Machine makes some real neat manual jackplates for smaller motors. www.bobsmachine.com

Neat guy. You'll love his stuff.

What you guys think? Does it need to be tilted more and moved up?

Re: Raising motor

I would say most definitely. The AV plate (the lower of the two plates)should be atleast evwen with the bottom of the boat. Looks like you could also trim the motor out/up. Just my opinion & am sure the experts will add comments.

Re: Raising motor

Thanks Dave. Wasnt sure which plate was supposed to be even with the bottom of the boat. I think Im going to make my own jack plate because the cheapest mini I found was $70 and I can make one (will be stronger too) for a lot cheaper than that.

Re: Raising motor

The one thing I dont understand about jack plates is how do you use your clamps to clamp the motor on? Doesnt look like there's enough room to tighten the clamps.

Re: Raising motor

It looks like the bracket is angled enough to possibly work the screws in & out. I would think that with a spacer like that it would be a good idea to bolt the motor to it. There should be bolt holes at the bottom of the mounting bracket but not sure about the top. I would also leave room for adjustment (up & down). With the motor farther behind the boat, you can raise it up more.

Re: Raising motor

Im pretty sure that my motor only has 2 bolt holes at the bottom of the bracket. 1 on either side.
