raising motor on transom

I did a search on the best way to raise the motor on the transom and saw some talk of a jack plate system.
My transom is 17.5 inches to the bottom of the keel and I have a long shaft motor with 20 inch shaft.
Can I just put a 2.5 inch block of wood on the top of the trasom, set motor on top of block, then drill the mounting holes and bolt motor?
It seems like a logical thing to do, but I'm new to power boats so I have a feeling it's not quite as easy as it seems.....
Thanks,
dave.

You can use the block as a spacer if you like,to locate holes. However, there is no need to leave it in unless you just want to.Transom brackets are not designed to sit flush to top of transom in all applications.

What engine do you have, Dave? What boat?

Is the 17.5" the vertical drop from the top of the transom to bottom level or is it a measurement on the transom?

Where is the anti-ventilation plate compared to the bottom or keel when the engine is mounted?

All of this information will make a difference in what your best solution is. Let us know. :)

Re: raising motor on transom

Thanks for the replies,
The boat is a 16.6 foot Hartley medium V made of glass over ply which I restored. The boat would be front heavy as there is a small cabin on the front half of the boat. I'd never heard of or seen a Hartley till I came to New Zealand, but they are a very popular local design. The motor is a 1981 60hp evinrude two cylinder which I just finished rebuilding (and is finally running right now that I've torqued all the loose bolts i forgot etc....)
I just assumed the transom measurement would be from the bottom, but I just ran out and checked and the front of the boat bottom appears to be somewhat lower than the transom bottom....
So, maybe I don't have to raise the engine after all?
Thanks,
dave.

Dave,After you determine the point at which you will mount motor insure that the anti cavitation plate of motor will end up roughly even with bottom of boat at the transom. This look anything like your boat?
