Rafting my toon with a bowrider - advice

We upgraded to a 22 ft Signature Series this year and have friends with a bowrider. This past weekend we went to some cooler water to swim for the day instead of the murky warmth of our typical sandbar. We tied the boats togather and had a ski on either side. Some old guy in a gazillion footer was pulling a skier and for 4 or 5 passes failed to see the wide open lake with no boats all around and insited on driving huge wakes into us. We finally did some waving and yelling and chased him away, but the damage was done. Slightly dented toon from one of the skis and a pretty big gouge on the other siderail from the bowrider's wakeboard tower. No damage to skis or bowrider, thankfully.

My question is, when tieing two boats of such dissimilar size and rail depth, what has anyone had success with? We used three bumpers and it worked well when there wasn't a tidal wave on us, but we had to watch his tower didn't roll into our bimini frame, and then there was how tight do we tie them together, etc. etc. It was both our first time trying it so we were definately winging it, but we both have been baoting for years and aren't dummies. Advice?

Big fenders. I know they're expensive but size does matter. I have ones that are 12" x 28 " that I got used off ebay, four fenders with felt covers for $150 delivered. Normally that setup would cost close to $500 new.

Big fattie fenders would be my answer. The 4-6-8 inch diameter ones do not provide much help when the going gets rough.

Been there, done that. Hate to say it but you can't raft up together unless you are in a designated no-wake area or out in the boon docks away from everyone. I don't care how big your fenders are, damage will occur eventually, and you'll be lucky if its only the boats that get damaged and not the fingers, hands or other body parts of your crew members trying to fend off the other boat. Anchor close together, but don't tie off to one another. Good luck !!!

Big fenders are nice but they are a hassle to store when you pull them in to go underway. Leave them out and they catch the water too much and splash.
I was at the cove a couple weeks ago and saw this nice cigarette boat tie up to another boat and they deployed large inflatable bumper thing. Was like the size of 2 rafts...looked overkill but would be nice because you can easily store it...if you have a small airpump your golden...not sure i would want to manually inflate that thing every time.

Maybe.....but not an issue I have. I leave two out that I place in front of my helm. There's plenty of space between it and the forward lounge. The third one I stow under the sunpad. The fourth I leave at home but could still easily haul it....there's room for three of them in front of my helm.

Three's always been plenty and I gotta say " big fat fenders rock! " when it comes to protecting the boat. Yes Sir, nothing like some big fatties between your boat and what ever the waves are trying to smash it against.

Glad I have them.

Still, Rooster probably has the best advice esp. if there's waves around.

I have no experience with these but they might be worth a look.
