I am trying to remove the rack and pinion steering box. The steering wheel
needs to come off first. It looks like one of those nuts that are hammered and crimped on is holding the steering wheel in the steering box. Can anyone
tell me for sure?

On my R&P Steering, the rack unbolts from the pinion (4 bolts), and the console that holdes the wheel and the pinion unbolts from the dash via 3-4 locknuts, under the dash. I do not remember any need to pull the wheel, althought my memory is not as good as it once was.

Don't know about a hammered on nut. The nut is probably self locking with the nylon locking mecnanism on top (that you see). Comes off like any other nut, ccw.

The usual method of removal of the wheel is to sit in the seat with your knees/thighs against the lower part of it providing upward pressure.

A little pre-soaking with penetrating oil helps and also having the nut even with the top of the shaft helps to prevent damage to the threads.

A several smart whacks with a good sized hammer (2-3 lb mall best) should dislodge it.

The nut I am talking about is the same kind that is on the axle of a little red wagon that holds the wheel on . Everyone has put together a little red flyer wagon when they were little. I dont see how I can take the box off until the steering wheel comes off.

The nuts on my little red wagon were press on caps. A few sidweways wacks would make 'em loosen up and fall off. Of course they were tricky to reuse.
