i've got an 8hp 2 stroke 1995 tohatsu that i'm trying to get as much power and speed out of as possible. i'm not worried about the longevity of the motor as much as the performance:D. does anyone have an idea how to advance the timing on this motor or even whether or not this will help. according to the rules of the race i'm not allowed to modify the engine, only adjust anything adjustable. hope someone has some nuggets of wisdom here. thanks in advance.

You could contour the lower unit. Other than that you shouldn't do anything.

thanks for the quick response! i'm not allowed to modify anything on the motor except to grind away the leading edge of the cav plate to make room for a leg support. would this help with drag? and are you sure that adjusting the timing wouldn't let it rev a little higher?

you can disconnect the rev limiter, just don't push it pass 6500rpm, you can also adjust the carb / throttle linkages so that they close all the way ... when you open the trottle you will see the linkage only goes to a certain point .... if you take your finger and pull it down you will see it go more, you can adjust it so by throttle it goes all the way down ...... also ... run a thinner oil in your gearbox, should give a little extra revs ....
