I know there are a bunch of folk in the construction biz here...

Anyone have any experience and recommend a quiet pocket door?

I've installed a few of these for others, and IMO they sound cheap. I'm putting one in my own home this time. It will be centrally located on the main floor so I want it quiet. The big box stores carry lots of junk and the best I can find are Stanley and Johnson, but looking at the wheels I'm not confident they are going to deliver what I'm looking for.

Anyone know of something 'smoooth and quiet'?

Agreed with the cheap stuff. I've never liked pocket doors personally.
Maybe if they had some of the soft closing hardware like some cabinet drawers have.

Have fun!!!

That one does look good. I've looked at the Stanley's and Johnson's and like I say they (imo) are the best of the big box stores.

I'm searching for the 'ultra silent'....something of high quality. Those companies are building for the masses and bend to what people will pay and quality.

Something like the blum (blumotion) system we use in kitchen cabinets...very smooth and soft...slick.

Capmello, I wrote that before I read your post...you are thinking 'exactly' what I'm thinking. I too am not a great fan of pockets, which is why I'm looking for something exceptional. An oversized slider with soft close would be very cool.

I am putting a bathroom centrally located on the main floor and am insulating for sound and want the door too to be silent also.

Its my house, my labour is free :) so I spend more on quality hard ware.

I agree with using the Johnson hardware ( 1500 series) with the delrin/ nylon wheels. Do not know if big box stores carry the 1500 series as I get mine from lumber yard. They are pretty quite when used with a solid core door.
Just a thought--Then maybe some dynamat- like strips on the side of the track to reduce resonance?

You want cool ?- check this out---

FWIW Update:

Well, after scouring the net and multiple calls to businesses I'm giving up finding something unique.

I did find some European stuff, but it was $2000 plus shipping across the pond.

The pneumatic system fits the 'cool' factor, but I can see myself first thing in the morning, sipping my first cup of coffee - it does its trick and in my morning stuper I can't remember how to open the friggin' door.

Johnson has this market summed up. 1500 or 2000 series with the ball bearinged rollers looks to be the best I can find.

Thanks for the input guys.

Keep in mind, nothing is stopping you from upgrading the hardware yourself. Add sound deadoning like suggested (you can spray outside of track with rubberized undercoating). If you go hollow core, you can even add foam inside the door to prevent that hollow door reverb. The bearings can likely be removed and replaced with sealed bearings, the same type used in automotive applications and high end toolbox slides. Most important for a silent mount, rubber grommets under every washer. Just because it is shipped that way, doesn't mean you have to install it that way. Like you said, labor is free. If nobody makes the perfect pocket, make it yourself.

Thanks Lowkee, thats the plan.

Rubber grommets...duh, of course, didn't think of that one. A rubber strip between the track and header should make a huge difference in sound transfer also.

Thanks!
