Does the big snap ring have to go back in after gimble bearing replacement or not? I thought I had read it is not necessary.

L6 165 Mercruiser 1973 build.

Thanks guys,
Bill

Hi Don, thanks. That's what I thought then did a quick search and found where Bond O said it wasn't necessary anymore. Just about to button it all back up and get back on the water.

Glad to be back, you guys are the best. :)

good to see ya back pb. hadn't seen ya around for a good little while.... sounds like yer gettin yer boat all fixed up and happy... cool.

i understand that snap ring ain't necessary too. but when i did my gimble brg. i did put it back. i used it as a reference as to how deep i wanted to drive the new brg. in. + once ya have something big enough to do the snap ring with. it isn't that big a deal to put it back where i found it. .. i didn't think..

side note, i've already been ridiculed by someone here, ;) for putting it back where i found it... i posted up a pic with it installed. oh well, i doubt it hurts anything to have it there either. it's just my wasted time... :D

Re: Quicky 165 Mercruiser gimble bearing question..

Hi ziggy. Yeah, I've not had the boat on the water for one whole season do to other priorities, money shortages etc. but now I may have the time. Still short of money, but aren't we all. :lol
I was going to put my snap ring back in and still probably will but I have lost my snap ring pliers either here at home or at the machine shop. I might be getting a little senile, who knows. ;)

I turned my own alignment tool and it checks out great even though the boat is 35 years old now. The temps are in the high 90's today so I may end up taking the afternoon off and finishing up tomorrow morning. I was going to do some looking at the service manual downloads but can't seem to get them to work anymore. Anybody got any tricks to it for a guy that is not a computer type?

Hope to be posting more when the boat is done and back on the water. I have been pondering the idea of converting the old hull to a center console to make it more fishable but I might keep her classic style if I wise up. :)
