Quicksilver control issue

All,

Hopefully I am posting this to the right area.

After a great day of boating on the Saginaw Bay in Beautiful Michigan, we were coming back up the river to the launch, we came out of a no wake zone and went to apply some throttle and the lever went way past the "full throttle" position. Now the handle appears to spin on the shaft.

My question has muliple parts;

1) How do I determine what model I have of the help control (I think it is a 2000 or 3000)?

2) How can I get the handle off to check out the internals? I have taken the set screw out and it appears to just pull straight out, but I didn't want to force it. I have a square "throttle only" button on pivot of the lever.

3) How hard are parts to get for these? I assume that they are still available, or would it be better to replace the whole deal?

Thanks, in advance, for the help.

Post a picture of your control.

I will post a pic...I can only take a pic of the handle. If that is what identifies it, then I believe that the part number is 88150A7.

Thanks,

Here is the control that I have. I didn't want to force the handle off. Once that is off, how hard is it to replace parts? Should I just replace the whole thing as the shaft feels stripped?

I am quite handy and feel comfortable attacking these things, but the adjustments worry me a little.

Thanks in advance.

Awesome...I wonder if all I need is a new handle? Thanks.

Do you have a link to the installation manual? This tells me how to disassemble the whole thing, but I may just get a whole new control as I dont know what else has worn out. I am quickly finding out that this boat did have a "good" life prior to me getting it.

Thanks again!

Last stupid question....The "neutral lock" means that I am supposed to have to press the button in to get out of neutral right? I dont think I have had to do that on my boat (not a good thing). Thus lending to the previous post about not having a "good life".

Re: Quicksilver control issue

Well all..

Update...I went to take a serious look at my control and subsequently realized that the set screw on the bottom of the handle had come loose. There was so much dirt packed in the hole, that I didn't even notice it was there until I read it in one of the 10,000 posts I read last night.

Anyway, things appear to be back to normal and maybe (just maybe) I can have a single day of boating with nothing going wrong. So far, I am 0 for 5 in the last 5 trips so maybe this weekend will be it......

Wish me luck, pray for sunshine, and kiss my tush if you don't like it!

Thanks to all of those who helped, offered words of wisdom, or just decided to give me crap (cough 190SVR).

Are you talking about the button at the bottom of the shift handle? That is the throttle only button. Normally when you push the throttle forward two things happen, you advance the throttle and you shift into gear. If you push and hold the button in it disengages the shift mechanism and you can advance the throttle without shifting, allowing the boat to warm up at a higher rpm. The button stays in until you bring the shifter back to neutral (idle speed), where it pops back out reengaging the shifter mechanism.

Re: Quicksilver control issue

I was not referring to the button at the bottom. I know about the "throttle only" button. I was actually referring to the "trigger button" at the top of the handle. Now that I have taken the handle off and realized that the splines in the aluminum casting are toasted (another facet to the "not good life" that this boat led previously), I had to buy a whole new control (NOS) because apparently this is a common issue with these controls and the handles are few and far between. Anyway, it will be here this week (hopefully) and I will be finally rid of the throttle gremlins on my boat. Plus, I think that the slipping handle wasn't allowing my engine to rev to full throttle as I was only getting about 4000 RPMS max and I used to see 4400 RPMs.

Wish me luck!

So how did the replacement go? I too have the broken neutral button. Is "NOS" the brand of your replacement? Is it a direct replacement?

Re: Quicksilver control issue

Hello all,

I have fixed the problem and to answer lmannyr's question, the "NOS" I referred to is called "new old stock" and I would up buying the WHOLE control. It is an exact replacement for the one that came out. I only used the handle and actually have all the rest of the kit in the box. So if you handle casting is good, I have the rest of the control that I would be willing to sell. This is BRAND NEW, never used. Includes everything but the handle. It has the neutral button and everything. PM me if this interests you.

Thanks for all the help regardless, boat is running well. It is really wierd to have "fine motor control" again.

:)

I also have the same problem where the handle got stripped. Where did you find the control? Do you have a part number?

Thanks
