You can use white marine grease.Thats all I have ever used. You can get it anywhere.Dont forget to spread a thin film in the housing to let the impeller get a smoothe first glide.Charlie

I prefer liquid soap of some form inside the water pump. Petroleum softens rubber. :)

The Johnson-Evinrude blue Triple-Guard grease will work fine for those applications. It is also designed for rubber products and formulated so they won't swell up. Do not use it for U-joints, gimble bearings, or wheel bearings as it is not an EP type of grease. It works great on bolt threads in saltwater to keep them from corroding and freezing up.

the impellor isnt rubber its neoprene.. in fact very little of what folks think of as rubber (with the possible exeption of tyres) is actually rubber.. whatever u put around the pump aint likely to stay there long anyway its more for the initial dry spin while the pump primes than anything else..

still i spose it can be expected that a merc manual calls for a merc product..

trog100

Just a thought here....for a boat that will spend most of it's life high and dry on a trailer between weekends (like mine will). Doesn't that impeller get an initial "dry start" every single time? I fail to see how a single pre-lube job on the blades is going to do much good in the grand scheme of things. Or is there some sort of check valve or bowl in there that always holds the water in even after the boat's been out of water for a while? Just curious, and still absorbing knowledge from all you gurus out there.

Thanx.

Most of the time, the pump is completely submerged and full of water when you start up. About the only exception would be those used on barges.

Craze1 - On my Alpha, when you first put the impeller it it is very stiff and straight. You have to turn the shaft to bend the vanes as you push the housing on. The prelude makes the process easier and allows the impeller to break-in w/o being damaged.... When you take an impeller out the vanes are no longer straight but curved.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it :)

Mercrusier 5.0 waterpump issue

Mercrusier 5.0 waterpump issue

I am new here and have a question. I have purchased a 260 HP 5.0 Mercrusier boat. I had the out drive serviced and thw engine tuned. I am having a audible alarm every 65 secs. and the water temp is about 180-190 F. I am pretty sure that it is the raw water impeller like on my sailboat. Can I cahnge the impeller itself or do I have to buy a repalcement water pump assy? Any tips or tricks to replace? What lube do you use?
Thanks
