Re: Quickest 25hp or 30hp?

QUICKEST ??
at what?
Quickest to plane a small heavy boat?
Quickest to accellerate to full rpm?
Quickest to ....
Fastest top speed? with no concern about the holeshot?

If it is underpowered for the weight of the boat, it will never be quick.

If its not propped right, never quick.

All the manufacturers have the rpm range and the gear ratio listed on their website. Factor travel for any particular pitch prop, minus slip factor, and you can calculate top speed for that prop. Then, only testing will tell you if that prop is the correct prop for your boat.

If you are not happy with the performance of your 40, why would you consider going to a 25 or 30. Makes no sense at all.

Re: Quickest 25hp or 30hp?

It's not that i'm not happy with the performance of my 40, it's just I don't like the motor. Rough running, a little heavy for the boat and the mechanism that locks the motor up has broken twice and I have lost faith. To keep the Waterways Authority happy my boat has a maximum rating of 25hp. I had a 25hp Suziuki ages ago that was great. Good top end which is what I want. Anything with better top end than 25-30hp Suzuki?

Ok, I get it now.
If you are looking to buy new, carbed 2 stroke, better do it quick. Most all manufacturers are discontinuing them. Then you will need to go with a used one, or 4 stroke, which will be heavier.

For the quickest...A 2-stroke over a 4-stroke and a three cylinder over a two cylinder. The quickest to the slowest would be:

2-Stk-3 Cyl
4-Stk-3 Cyl = 2-Stk-2 Cyl(Kind of depends on this one))
4-Stk-2 Cyl...I don't think anyone is making one of those.

The Suzuki would be the probably be the best choice, if you could find one.

Thanks for the advice guys. It's for a 11 foot tinnie and i'm looking for something with good top end. Needs to be short shaft.

I'd go for a 3-cyl 30hp yamaha, fairly quick and smooth running. And lighter (don't remember how much) than the 40hp motors.

Trailer Boats Magazine did an article on this very subject, about two years ago. They compared 25's.

You can probably find it at:

www.trailerboatsmag.com

Hard to beat the DT25 Suzuki. Hard to find them now. Yamaha make a good 25 and they are still around.

Its the DT25C that you want (or DT30C). There was a 2 cylinder prior to the three (C) that had the DT designation. Adding the 30 horse parts is easy and she responds to incresing compression, jetting, and exhaust flow nicely. If you are on the hunt look for a pre '90 (almost certain) 25 or 30. The early cylinder head had a smaller volume and the early CDI units idled on all three. If the motor was in salt and shows any signs of corrosion.....beware. They really do need to come apart (in my opinion) at least every 24 months to keep the fasteners free even in fresh water. I disassemble mine (except for splitting the crankcase most times) every year after duck season.

Re: Quickest 25hp or 30hp?

I hate to admit this, but my next door neighbor's
25 Yamaha is faster (slightly) on the top end than my 25 Mercury. Both motors are 2 cyl. 2-strokes with factory props on 14' aluminum boats. Mine's quicker out of the hole though, and mine looks cooler.
