I am looking for some help with my quicksilver shifter.I've been told its probably the switch in the shifter. The trailer button works fine. I don't know what the part number is or how to find it so I can replace it. I heard there may be a repair kit??? Thanks for any help.
I have a 1989 Searay 220DA With a V6.

10 to 1 it's the trim limit switch on the outdrive

The limit switches have been disconnected for a long time, they need to be replaced, They have the famous wires broken . But who knows that may be it.

Either the repaired connections which over-ride the old trim limit switch have failed, you've got a broken or loose connection somewhere else, or the thumb switch in the remote is bad. The up solenoid seems to be ok since the trailer button still works. When you engage the switch to up, does the resistance (through your thumb) feel different that when you go down?

After tracing the wires through the transom to verify there are no breaks, I'd dissasemble to remote control, remove the switch and either go to a marine store or a old boatyard and look for a new switch.

with boats....you really have to watch out......

rule of thumb.......test it first ......KNOW what the problem is.......then replace.

if you just start guessing, and replacing.....you will go broke

Assuming your V6 is an IO, and not an outboard, here is .pdf file on how you can test your trim system.
The switches in the controls do fail, but not very often. Usually the solenoids or wiring on the trim pump itself.

As others said, it is not likely to be the switch on the remote. More than likely it is the Trim Limit Switch which is mounted on the port side of the transom. The switch on the strb side is the trim sender which feeds tells the guage what position the drive is in. That one is probably not broken, but when you replace the limit switch, I suggest you replace both. BUT FIRST, you should test the switch mounted in the remote control. I have a commander 3000 and I was able to test mine by simply disconnecting the wires that lead to the remote control (without having to remove it). Then I just hot wired the wires and observed. The Red wire is positive; Green wire is down; Purple wire is up; and Blue wire is trailer. If everthing works by hot wiring, then the switch is bad. My money is on the trim limit switch however. They take a lot of abuse.

Re: Quick Silver Commander shifter trim up/down switch, Up function not working

This has been talked about a million times here. Very simple to isolate the problem. First : Do not mess with the control... yet. Go to the back of the boat, locate the two black wires from the trim limit switch coming through the transom. Follow them back to two connectors, one with a purple/white wire and one with two blue white wires. Unplug the black wires and with a short piece of wire, jumper between the connectors. Try the trim switch. If it works the problem is the trim limit switch circuit. If it does not look at the p/w wire and control handle switch. Agree 10:1 it is the limit switch. Good luck

Re: Quick Silver Commander shifter trim up/down switch, Up function not working

The thread author already said that he has disconnected the trim limit switch. I agree that he should find the two leads that used to go to the limit switch and start working towards the bow/remote looking for a break in the circuit. If the wiring has not failed somewhere it seems like the trim switch on the remote is the next logicial place to test since the trailer button still brings the unit up, inidicating the up solenoid is likely ok. Ordinarily, I agree that 9 times out of 10 it is the limit switch or up/down solenoid and never the trim switch on the remote, however in this case and according to the author, the limit switch just doesn't seem to be a variable here.....

Thank You Don, It is an IO.

Re: Quick Silver Commander shifter trim up/down switch, Up function not working

Thanks alot!! I never knew they were connected in some way. BOTH My port and strb side wires are cut. I have the entire new kit but I heard it's a nasty job to replace them (Removing the outdrive completely, ETC...) I've heard people drill a hole through the transom (Like when you run depth finder wires) Instead of doing the giant job.

Sounds like I need to fix the trim and limit swiches first. Just heard it was a nasty job. Thanks so much for your input

Has your trim switch ever worked since the trim limit switch wires broke? If not, just bypass the wires TO the trim limit switch inside the boat by hooking the harness side of the wires together.
If the wires are just broken, and the wires doen't get hooked together, the only way you can get the drive to go up, is to use the trailer button.

Disconcerting the trim limit wires assures that the control handle switch will NOT work. You need to jumper between the two connectors that the limit switch used to go into to bypass the limit switch and test the control handle switch.

Re: Quick Silver Commander shifter trim up/down switch, Up function not working

Just a quickie on how it works. You have 4 wires at the control switch. Red supplies 12 V, green/white goes from the trim switch to up solenoid, Blue/white goes from the trailer switch to a connector near the transom with two b/w wires, voltage from the T switch goes in one and out the other to the up solenoid. The up trim switch connects to the purple/white wire that goes to the stern and through a connector into the trim limit switch wire (black) through the tl switch and back through a black wire to the connector with the two b/w wires and on to the up solenoid. So if you take a short piece of insulated wire and jumper between the p/w connector and the b/w connector you have bypassed the tl switch and the up will work same as trailer, if you control handle switch is OK.
