Quick shift cable bellows question...

Howdy guys,

So this morning I was working on my shift cable bellows (Alpha I). I do believe I have it figured but I have a quick question.

I see that at the bell housing side, where the shift cable enters the housing, there is basically a cavity/space if you will, between the cable itself and housing. I really should have taken a photo to point out what I'm talking about, sorry.

Anyway, is the shift cable bellows (that collar part) supposed to slide all the way up and into that cavity? Or, just up to the housing and not necessarily into the cavity?

I hope I'm explaining that for you ok.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Quick shift cable bellows question...

Ayuh,.... If I read ya right, the bellows attaches firmly to the transom side, 'n the aft end is secured to the cable with a zip-tie, or crimp-ring...
The crimp-ring or zip-tie rides outside of any housings...

Bondo, you gave me a 2fer on that answer, thanks man!

There was a crimp ring included with my transom seal kit but a beefy zip tie would seem to be a lot easier/secure to put on, eh. Appreciate the tip:D

Ayuh,.... Mercury/ Mercruiser sells a fuel line zip-tie with a tiny *** on it that completes a Full circle seal, that lota guys use...
The last 1 I did, I put 2 standard zip-ties on it, opposite each other, for that Full circle seal....

Just use a single cable tie, and take it 2 turns around. Full circle complete, and the tie is twice as strong.... Just remember to cut the loose end off clean. I have seen guys opened up on a sharp edge (me included... When I catch someone cutting at an angle, I kick their b-hind..).

Yah, I'll admit, I am easily amused:rolleyes:

As for problems that will pop up with this engine install, I hope this will be the end of them.

Truth, I fear there will be far more challenging stuff ahead I'll be asking you guys about.
