I've used regular rustoleum on trailers with excellent results.

I used flat black Rusto over the rusty metal primer on a boat trailer 7 or 8 years ago and it's still holding up pretty well, don't remember which version of Rusto I used. It's getting to the point where it could use at least some touch up.

Rust-Oleum does manufacture a line of true Industrial Coatings. They can be purchased from places like Grainger and Fastenal. You can access their page by clicking on "Industrial" at the top of Rustoleum.com or by going to www.rustoleumibg.com.

Yup, just came across this on the Rustoleum website:

Q What are the differences between the Professional paints and the Stops Rust paints?
A Both product lines offer the same protection and durability you have come to expect from Rust-Oleum. Professional dries in 15 minutes.

Here's my plan for painting the new galvanized fenders I bought:

1) clean with solvent
2) rough up slightly with green scotch pad
3) light coat of ZC primer
4) coat of Rusto metal primer
5) topcoat with Rusto Professional

Sound good?

Later in the spring, I'm going to prep & repaint the rest of the trailer.

Also just found this great Q&A on the Rustoleum site:

Unless the trailer is aluminum, you probably don't need the ZC primer. I've used their rusty metal primer with excellent results. Just knock off the loose stuf and let 'er rip.

Re: Quick Rustoleum question

Let us know how it works out on the galvanized fenders....some paints don't adhere well
Galvanized steel
- Galvanized steel
Among its many applications, galvanized steel is used to make roofs for homes, fences and siding for garden sheds. Painting galvanized metals requires particular attention in terms of the products to be used and, more importantly, in terms of those to be avoided.

Use paint thinner* to remove any significant accumulations of grease or oil. Then, treat the entire surface (particularly the sections with exposed rust) with a metal conditioner/rust-remover* to ensure proper paint adhesion. Touch-up rusted sections with a primer before applying metal paint.

Caution: Never use muriatic (chlorhydric) acid, vinegar (acetic acid), copper sulphate or any other product not specifically designed for such use on galvanized metals; these products will accelerate the oxidization process and lead to the premature deterioration of the metal.

So is this Freudean "corporate speak", for the only real difference between the two, is the price? ;)

Before coating with Rustoleum I put on a heavy coat of Penatroil. It is marketed as a leveling agent for paint. Slobber in on and let it dry for a couple of days then do the Rustoleum thing.

Re: Quick Rustoleum question

I tested a snow plow bracket with their Industrial bare metal primer. Put 2 coats on it and laid it in my back yard next to my shed in the shade on the ground for 2 years. Not 1 spec of rust or any damage to the primer at all. It had direct contact with the ground for those two years. I could have washed it down, light sanding and painted it the same day. That sold me for their primer at least.

I've also used what Solittle suggested "Penatroil" which is getting harder to find around the VA/NC area. I've also mixed that with Rustoleum and used my HVLP sprayer to paint my trailer. It's held up good on the metal, it didn't fair as well on wood products (bed of the trailer) which I shouldn't be surprised since it's not probably the correct product to use on wood.

And when you do go to paint the trailer, do not paint over the rust or bubbled areas), it will just bubble again in 6 weeks.
Take it down to the bare metal (sanding disc), then prime!!!

(I wasted alot of good paint once, never again)

Re: Quick Rustoleum question

I have a bit of a mixed bag on this trailer. I repainted my 1965 boat trailer about 8 years ago. It had some rust on it, but not terrible. What I did for that was use a wire wheel on the whole thing, got all the loose rust off, then brushed it all with Rusto Rusty Metal Primer, then topcoated with Rusto flat black. It has held up very well.

I plan to do the same for this utility trailer. In looking over the directions on the can of rusty metal primer, I saw that it should not be used on unrusted metal because it will not penetrate & grab onto the surface. So on my new galvanized fenders, I sprayed a light coat of ZC etching primer, then brushed on a coat of flat black rusto. It went on pretty good, & I'll use the rusty metal primer on the rest of the trailer after I get the loose rust off with a wire wheel.

Hey, LL, I'd recommend using Valspar Tractor Paint with the hardener for your trailer. That's what I used on mine. I primed it first with the Valspar Rust Armor Primer. It turned out great. $50 bucks for the primer and Paint.

Re: Quick Rustoleum question

I was looking for flat black and looked at Valspar but didn't see that they had "Low Gloss Black". Went ahead and got Rusto Prof. One of my first spring projects.

Primer & paint = $24. ;) :)
