My new Teleflex tach...

...came with instructions for Merc/Mariner, not Johnson.

So I'm a little confused. Should I be setting my tach to 5P or 6P? Or something different?

Thanks in advance guys!

Looks like 5P to me Jas. Could always try it and if it seems high switch to 6P. Or count the poles on your stator.

Thanks rtek!

I don't have the OB in front me but I believe I have 10, anybody out there know for sure? Which would make the setting 5p, eh?

:)

Re: Quick question on tach setting...

Looking at iboats parts for 50 hp , '93-2005 all use the same stator. Pic here Looks like 6 poles to me. The whites ones (3) are ignition and the copper are the juice makers (alternator). No expert here, Jas. rtek has the idea - try both settings.

I'm so perplexed now....

I phoned Teleflex yesterday and he was "sure" I had 10 poles and the setting should be 5P.

Eh?

Re: Quick question on tach setting...

There is a very simple solution to this problem. Set the thing to 6P because that's what you have (even my 1995 Evinrude has a 6P stator) or 1) set it to 5P, start the engine, and then use a shop tach to verify the setting. 2) Set it to 6P and use a shop tach to verify the setting. You risk harming nothing at either setting. The only issue is whether or not the reading is accurate. 3) Another indicator would be to start the engine. If you have the tach set to 5P and it indicates an engine rpm of about 850 or so at steady idle, the setting is probably wrong since normal idle is 650 - 750 RPM.

Yah, that's prolly what I'll end up doing Silvertip. I was just trying to avoid buying one more thing (digital tach since I don't have one on hand).

Thanks a bunch for the info and suggestions, appreciated!

Re: Quick question on tach setting...

Just an update...

I emailed Teleflex regarding the discrepancy of 6P vs. 5P and here is what he hit me back with...

"Your pulse setting will be 5P. Any 2 stroke Johnson engine under 70hp is equipped with a 10 pole stator. However, if you want to check for yourself, check under the flywheel and count the poles on the stator and divide that number by 2. This will be your pulse setting. Example: 10 pole stator divide by 2 = 5P."
