Have a 1997 Johnson 90hp V4, crossflow in the shop. Found a 1997 Evinrude 90hp V4, looper. Are the gearcases interchangeable? I know they look different, but are they functionally the same in regards to driveshaft splines, shaft length, bolt up, etc.? Part number for the Johnson unit is 436771, and Evinrude unit is 435474.
Second question. If the Evinrude unit won't work, which units will? I know OMC messed around with the crossflow driveshafts along about 1992-1993, so I am pretty sure a 1992 and prior unit will not work. Will 1993 and up crossflow units work, or were there other changes along the way? Is the driveshaft the only difference between the earlier and later series units? Is it possible to simply swap out the earlier driveshaft with a later one and call it good, or are there other internal changes that would prevent that?
Thanks,
- Scott
