Quick Impeller Question

I have a 1975 Chrysler 55 hp on which I changed the impeller today. Since this is my first time, my question is this... Is the impeller supposed to fit tightly in the housing? I turned the impeller counter clockwise when placing it in the housing and the tips of the impeller are slightly bent. Is this normal?

Thanks for your advise.

Re: Quick Impeller Question

There are days when I HATE the slowness of this site!

Yes, Ziggy, it is proper that the vanes are bent.

Doouble check that CCW is the correct rotation.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Quick Impeller Question

Sounds perfectly normal. The vanes of the impeller must be snug against the cup inside the pump housing. I usually put a smear of vaseline on the cup to make the impeller's first few rotations a little easier. Time to fire it up and see how much water she moves! :)

Re: Quick Impeller Question

IT didn/t move alot of ater. IT was liek it ws a slow pour. I did not run the rpm's up at all. THe water that came out was luke warm to warm, so I felt as if it was circulating.

Will water come out before the thermostat opens? ANd will the velocity of water change. Goin to lake to run it tomorrow morning. I also have a new stat, but have no installed it yet.

Thanks a bunch.

Re: Quick Impeller Question

Replace the theromostate with any impeller installation. Its a cheap security measure and hey- your in there already doing work.

Also, the water should spit out of the pee hole pretty quickly after the engine is started. It needs time to suck it up off the flush ears and circulate through the motor, but should start to pee pretty quickly.
