Questions regarding boat covers

So the boat I bought has a cover, but it has some issues. The first option I have is just to fix the cover I have. Its a cover that likely came with the boat, but I am not sure. It covers the whole boat and snaps in place with cut-outs for the cleats and bimini top. Some of the snaps have detached and some of the stiching has come loose. It will also need some of the velcro reattached, but other than that there are no tears at all in the cover. Should I just this cover repaired or is there some reason that a cover will not be good after a few years?

If I do get a new cover most of what I see on sites like this are the ones that cover the boat and are held in place by straps. The boat will hopefully be in my garage over the winter and at the marina during the summer. Do the covers held on by straps work while in the water at a marina?

If I get a custom snap cover made is it going to be really pricy compared to many of the covers I see offered on this site and others?

The straps do not work on the water. Your best bet is to repair the existing cover you have at an upholstery shop. I would recommend spraying a fabric guard water repellent on it again as I am sure it has worn off some. If the cover is in decent shape it will be most cost effective to preserve it. IMHO

thanks - this is what I thought, but wasn't sure. I like the snapped cover better. I need to add some vents and possibly new poles as well.

Or you can take the old one as a pattern and have them make a whole new cover but repair will be a lot cheaper.

Repairing your self is the least expensive option. There is a site for DIY boaters that sells UV thread and snaps etc. It is very comon to have to repair ca over before it is replaced. The canvas will last about 10 years before you need a new one if your cover is custom and made with north american canvas. This does not apply to the cheap made in china covers you buy from in a box. Restitching needs to be done with a UV tread every 3-5 years depending on how long and much exposure to the elements it gets every year. New snaps can be applied and studs installed. You purhcase the product and then find a seamstress in your town to do any sewing that you need. Outdoor Fabrics Canada - - Sunbrella Distributor is an awesome source for what you need.
