I've got the Seloc Marine manual for Johnson/Evinrude outboards from 1973 to 1991. It says it covers all 60-235HP 3 cylinder, V4 and V6, 2 stroke models.

The tag on my outboard has a model of J75TLCTE, which the appendix says is a 1983 Johnson 75HP 3 cylinder with a type III carb.

If you flip to the section on type III carbs... it says this...

"Type III Carburetor with low speed orifice, intermediate speed orifice, and high speed orifice: All V4 and V6 powerheads 1979 and on EXCEPT 85HP 1980 only; also 115HP, 120HP, and 140HP - 1980 and on, 200HP and 225HP - 1986 and on."

If you flip back to page 4-9, it lists the types and the model years they used them... But it seems to ignore 1983. If you've got the manual check it out.

I was trying to help another member with his 120HP model, and found the same problem with a different model.

welcome to Seloc world. I've had similar experiences. Only OMC factory manuals for me. Rick.

Re: Questions on Seloc outboard manual

I have a Seloc manual on my desk right now. Its being used to raise the level of one of my regular flat panel monitors to the height of my wide screen flat panel.

Re: Questions on Seloc outboard manual

A guy at work was having problems with his motor and brought in a Seloc to have me look and give him advice, it covered 23 different engines, my advice was to get an OEM manual.

You don't need the parts catalog and not even the owners manual but the service manual is a must, it covers your engine only, if it is in the book it has to do with your motor.

If money is tight, universal these days, look on Ebay, you can usually get one for cheap and get the paper version, the cds are horrible.

Yeah I have to have that service manual, I plan on looking on Ebay today. I'd say money is tight, but mostly because, like everyone else here, I've got a whole list of things I want to do to the boat this year, and I'd like to get it all done before I first splash her. I said LIKE, because I know how this goes.

Re: Questions on Seloc outboard manual

Most of the aftermarket manuals are pretty vague to say the least, there are gaps in coverage, suspect information, and most are pretty hard to follow since they cover such a wide array of models.

I have a few of the Seloc books but only for a few off brand motors, and most came to me with junk boats. I don't think I'd spend money on one though, the same goes for those CD manuals sold online, most are just Clymer or Seloc manual scans which are even harder to follow than the paper copy since the Adobe page numbers don't match the book's glossary page numbers. Finding particular information is aggravating to say the least.

Re: Questions on Seloc outboard manual

I bought an owners manual for my 150, mistake, $40 for 40 pages and its all pretty well covered in the service manual anyway.

I have a clymer for my kicker, theres no comparison to the factory book.

The OEM is simple to read, like paint by number in step by step.
It makes for a very enjoyable read if you like this stuff.

The clymer is like having to assemble a jigsaw puzzle first, then ...maybe...the info is correct.

Re: Questions on Seloc outboard manual

The only problem with OEM manuals is that you need many of them, if you own a dozen motors, or work on many motors, you can quickly have several thousand wrapped up in OEM manuals. What I try to do is buy complete sets from shops selling out, slowly I'm gathering a complete set, mostly OMC but I'm slowly getting more and more Yamaha, Mercury, and Honda motors as well.
I keep waiting to find a complete dealer tool set and shop manual set but none yet. Their usually way out of my price range or already gone by the time the dealer sells out.
