Questions on Mercury 9.9 Bigfoot

Hi experts, I recently bought a new to me boat with a 2006 Mercury 9.9 Bigfoot 4-stroke outboard - serial 0R075887.

I am going thru and doing the maintenance before I use it. I reviewed the owners manual and have some questions I hope you can answer:
.
When running it on water muffs hooked to a garden hose, water streams out of the hole just below the lower-unit gear lube level screw - what is this a sign of? The telltale is working.

Is there an oil filter in this unit? If so where is it? The online manual mentions one, but I can't locate it so I suspect the manual is for a newer model.

Does someone have a pointer to a service manual? I tried the forum sticky post with no luck as they seemed to be for older models or 2-strokes.

Thank you in advance, and happy boating!

For a manual try Boatinfo.com.. The hole in the lower unit is probably a drain and not to be plugged.....When you shut down the motor it should continue to drain....

Not all small 4 strokes have a filter.--------There are several versions of 9,9 Mercury 4 strokes.

Yea I guess I should of said if there is a filter then it should look like this....I did look at the manual for a 9.9/15 bigfoot and it showed a filter...But as you said it may not be the same motor...

Hi Guys, thanks for the responses - appreciated!

I did look at the single 9.9 4-stroke manual I found on boatinfo - boatinfo.no/lib/mercury/manuals/8-99.html - it is from 1996 and shows the lower unit fill/drain, etc in a different place to my unit - it also shows an oil filter which I don't seem to have - and it does not cover the extended length lower unit of the bigfoot.

So hoping some-one has a link to a more recent service manual applicable to the 2006 bigfoot 9.9?

Looking at brunswich marine's website, I believe OB-SM-035 is the manual that might help - anyone have a pdf copy to share/link to one?

Thanks.

On the Boatinfo site there is a 9.9/15 bigfoot four stroke manual just to the right of the 8/9.9 four stroke manual..... You need to scroll sideways.....There is a little grey line under the manuals that you slide across....

4 stroke 9.9 323cc engines from 2001-2004 used an oil filter
4 stroke 9.9 209cc 2005- Current don't have oil filters. (Yours is a 2005)
You may see an oil filter in the service manuals because most service manuals will cover the 9.9 and 15 and all the 15 hp have oil filters.

Thanks Hardwater for the pointer on the bigfoot manual on boatinfo - great!

Hi Yegboats, thanks for the oil filter info. as well as the water flow diagram - that helps!

See attached pic of water flowing out the hole just below my gear lube level screw when running on muffs - I do not see it shown in your diagram - any ideas - is this normal, or a sign of something that needs repair?

Thanks!
