questions on edge trim

The black trim that goes around the edges of the fiberglass on my boat is ratty and coming off. This is the stuff that goes around the edged of the I/O housing, the dash, etc.

I've googled it and I'm not even sure what it's called, or what type is the best.

Is there a type of adhesive that is recommended?

Would it help to cut the backside on a sharp corner so that it would stay on better?

I think you are referring to a type of pinch on windlace. It,s simply an edge trim used to cover the raw fiberglass edge. This windlace is held in place by the gentle metal teeth on the backside of the trim. Is this correct?

It's called "rub rail". Don't know why you couldn't get it at like Wholesale Marine or some marine supply outfit. You don't glue it in you get it warm and work it into the molding as you go. Most take it all the way around the boat in one piece starting at the center in the back. Before cutting it off let it sit a day or two to allow for shrink. If you must cut it... leave yourself about 4-6".

there is no rubrail on the dash................ I think he/she is referring either piping or edge molding

Didn't notice the dash part... much less around the I/O. Sorry! I wasn't very attentive was I. Jumping to conclusions is just one of my flaws.

Almost sounds like that "U" shaped stuff they put on car doors. But that stuff isn't going to be found on an I/O for dressing either. How about a boat type... that may help in a weird way.

I think <this> is what the op is looking for. Just do a search Iboats store for 'edge trim'. You can get 25' or 200' rolls in different widths and either black or white.

It's called "flex trim" and comes in black or white in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2". Find in most surplus places, just google "flex trim".

Yes, "flex trim" is what I was trying to describe.

Thanks for all the help and the links. Sorry I wasn't more descriptive.

Any hints or tricks for putting it on and getting it to stay on?

Re: questions on edge trim

I have the style that has the internal teeth that secure it, looks just like vinyl.
I pulled it completely off to buff the dash area and while it was off systematicaly piched it tight with a vise moving it along the length 6" at a time, tuned it right back into bang on.
I have seen the same exact stuff on auto headliners and doorjambs hatches ect.
