Hi all,

I have a new boat and it is the 1st inboard outboard I have ever owned.

1. What oil should I use? I have heard straight 40 weight. Boat is ran in chesapeake bay. The current oil is black and thins out after heating.

2. What kind of out drive do i have? It is not marked and has countless years of black spray paint on it.

3. How fast can I run it. The previous owner said 2400 rpm which puts me at 15-18 knots on speedo.

Thanks

Re: Questions on 1975 24 ft scat craft with 302 engine.

You have given few details except 302. So 302 Ford
188hp and 888 drive. Guess by the year pre-alph out drive look for lifting lug on top of gear case on out drive. check out www.mercstuff.com you can identify your drive. Engine with prestolite or Ford or Mallaroy or Merc own distributor. with points dewll 27 to 31 deg. timing 10 deg. BTDC. plugs RF10C Champion. Use lead additive to gas 85 octane. Idle 550-650rpm Top RPM WOT 4600 to 4800 if not check prop for correct pitch and size. Use reg. engine oil 10W 30W many arguments on this.
