I'm contemplating adding smart tabs in the course of my restoration job. I have two issues I would like resolved.

One is that at moderate speed (tubing etc) with full passenger load the boat rythmically porpoises. I have no adjustable trim but I have played with the shims in the motor mounts. I can modulate the porpoising by shifting passenger(s) forward.

The second is that on glassy calm water at high speed (35-45 mph) with full passenger load the boat gets scary as if it is trying to bow steer. Years back I tried fixed tabs. They liked to beat me to death in moderate to rough water. You can still see the mounts on the transom.

Will smart tabs remedy these issues? attached pictures are to show you the transom and hull type.
Re: Questions for NautiJohn

The porpoising is one of the most common complaints from boaters with OB or I/O's and is a factor of weight and balance. The porpoising will be eliminated. The bow steering with a full load is also an issue of balance. If it is truly bow steering and the bow is running too far down then you simply have too much weight forward. Hoever; if the boat is simply drawing too much water as if it is overloaded then that is another issue. What is the top speed of the boat with a full load?

The fixed tabs will help the boat plain easier, and can help eliminate the porpoising, but the faster you run the more they will lift the stern (just like Hydrofoils when run at or below water level) and the bow steering will be an issue for sure.

My gues is that since you do not have trim on the motor you are running with the adjustment all the way down. This will also lift the stern (the prop is lifting it) and cause a bow down bow steering issue.

My suggestion is to use the Smart Tabs $T1290-60 and move the adjsutment on the motor out 2 holes. This should bring the motor to near perpendicular to the water surface eliminating the stern lift from the motor. The Tabs will get rid of the porpoising and put the boat on plain in a flash.
