For the last 40 years I have been using my trusty 1975 16' Starcraft American bowrider with a 115 Johnson. It has been and still is a great boat and is still going strong but the floor is getting a bit soft and I'm worried about what kind of shape the spars are in.
As such, I have been thinking about getting a newer boat. I want another bowrider OB runabout and so have been looking at the Glastron SX and SSV 170 models. I can't go too much longer - maybe to 18' if I get a trailer with a fold away tongue - due to the size of our boathouse.
I am looking at a 2000 SX170 at the moment but have a few questions which I hope some of you are able to answer. The boat I'm looking at has a 90 hp Johnson on it. That would not have enough power to meet my needs so I would be wanting to sell that and put a bigger engine on it. Ideally, if I could afford it I'd put either a 130 or 150 e-Tec on it. For the time being, however, I don't have the funds to do that so I'm thinking that maybe I could throw my 115 on it and run with that for a few years until I have the funds to buy a good used e-Tec on it.
My first question is, what is the shaft length on the J90 likely to be assuming it was properly matched to the SX-170?
How well does the SX 170 work as a ski boat? My old Starcraft has a tiny wake and I love that. I realize that the much beamier SX 170 is very likely going to have a larger wake than what I'm used to but I'm hoping it won't have a huge hard wake. I typically ski at 32 mph.
Are there any weaknesses/flaws on the 2000s that I should be aware of? I don't have a lot of knowledge about Glastrons although I've heard they're a good quality boat.
Thanks in advance
