Hello, I recently got a 2004 Nissan NS140A2 . I realize that the Tohatsu is the same unit. Since getting this motor I have realized that they seem to be very rare in the central part of the US and parts and dealers are few and far between also. Even online parts are certainly not as easy to source as they have been for my Evinrudes and Mercs. I have done hours of internet reading and have a factory service manual and found the parts manual online but still am unclear on several things. If anyone has more info. it would be greatly appreciated.

1. Are parts for this motor already hard to get in the USA?

2. I find many, almost all parts listed for the 140 as for 2002 and earlier. ( I don't see big design changes called out in the service manuals, they appear to be the same engine. Are they actually different for 2003 until the TLDIs came along? Seems unlikely to me that everything changed.)

3. Also I want to repower from a 1990 Evinrude 120 V4 to the Nissan 140. I need a remote control with harness and cables and wondered what electrical harness will work? Will any 2 stroke control box and harness work or do I need a certain year for a 4 cylinder motor? The harness seems to be discontinued per the part number I find so I figure a used one on Ebay is my only option.

I appreciate someones Tohatsu/Nissan knowledge. Information on the small engines is plentiful but the large engines seem to be another story. I would appreciate any background or help with all things related to the large 2 stroke engines.

Thanks for your time.

I recently re-powered a customer's boat with an old 140. It went smoothly. The 140 is a little hard on fuel compared with a TLDI, but is exceptionally smooth throughout the whole power band. The 140 is in the same family as the 120 and the 115 of that same vintage. As with all Tohatsu outboards, year of manufacture is irrelevant for servicing -- model/serial are the defining numbers. Because the 140 went out of production for the US about 10 years ago, the last parts manual was printed in 2003... but a 140A2 is a 140A2, so no worries about part number cross references. Carb kits and water pump kits are still readily available.

The side-mount control box is still available new:
3D9843700MRC BOX (RC5E) NISSAN, 120/140 (SILVER/GRAY) $400.00

Likewise, the cord between the box and motor is available:
3C7761140MEXTENSION CORD (11P) 2 METERS LONG 6.56FT $121.63

And any good morse-type throttle and shift cables will work.

Thank you Paul for your help. I had thought that parys for a 140A2 would fit. And the part # for the cord is a big help. I was looking it up online and thought it was obsolete already. I may have been looking for the wrong part #. I will research again.
Thanks again for the help.
