Questions about my new "to me" Mercury Model 45 4.5hp Outboard.

I just bought a 1978 Mercury 45, 4.5hp Outboard, which I am so far VERY pleased with, but I have a couple of questions.

1.) It has a little toggle below the choke switch that is labled "Troll", what exactly does it do?

2.) This is being used on a Sailboat, and when I lower the motor into the water, the tiller has to be in the up position due to lack of clearence with the transom, with it in the up position I am unable to control the throttle... I have heard sugestions that this is only when it's in the neutral gear, but I haven't been able to go out and test that yet...and I was only testing it while it was not running. The throttle does work fine when it's lowered, but I have to have the motor angled away from the boat then counter the direction with my rudder. hopefully what I have heard about the nutral "lockout" of the throttle is correct, otherwise...is there somthing else I'm missing, or a fix/modification?

Thank You for any and all suggestions or/and helpful tips on this motor, I hope to make it a long time member of the family.

Considering the moter I WAS using was an ESKA 3.5 hp, with no gears and very simple (related to this motor) I feel like I went from a Ford Model "T" to a Ford Ranger Pickup in power, capibility and complexity...but then my experience with outboards is VERY limited thus far.

Cheers!
Eric
