Does anybody know of a good place around Lake Cumberland that you can camp and just walk to your boat be it either a slip or mooring spot. Also what natural attractions and points of interest are there on the lake. Thinking of doing a long weekend and would like some ideas. Its about a 5 hour trip for me. I googled Lake Cumberland and couldn't really get a good idea about the lake and its facilities from the web sites that I visited. If anybody knows of any good web sites about the lake, that to would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Kent

Kent, I was there for a week in August, lots of years ago. The air was 99*, the lake was 98*. if you stayed up to your neck in the lake and drank cold beer, you did not sweat too much. The only time you were cool was in a speeding open boat soaking wet.

That part of Kentucky was dry in those days. We had to smuggle beer in from Tennesee.

Been there done that......and paid about double for the beer. Supply and demand is in full effect in those parts! Buy it before you go!

When we lived in KY we camped in the state park and put the boat in a slip at state dock. You have to drive, way too far to walk, but its nice there. Breakfast at the lodge overlooking the lake is gorgeous.

And the comment about the county being dry around there, THAT IS TRUE. I live in Kentucky on Talyorsville Lake and all the major lakes are in dry counties. That is except for Taylorsville Lake which just changed this last election. There are now two liquor stores and numerous places that sell beer within 2 miles of the lake. So if you need beer for your trip, you better pick up plenty of it on the way!!

I saw a documentary on Lake Cumberland. Apparently the big dam is built on porus and weak limestone, and could break at any second. They have lowered the lake to reduce the pressure on the dam.

See http://www.lrn.usace.army.mil/wolfcreek/faq.htm for explanations to what's going on with the dam.

They've drawn the water level down, and working to fix the dam. It's not likely that a failure is eminent.

They're also working on Center Hill Dam--65 miles east of Nashville. The rock under the dams is somewhat porous, and not best suited to build dams on.

OK, so limestone is not good for building dams. Does anyone know what limestone (actually limestone infused water) is very good for?

Also makes for strong legged thoroughbred race horses, a Kentucky product as famous as its bourbon!
