I'd recommend contacting your local DMV .... in most states they handle titles and should be able to provide you with the steps necessary to get one

Here in PA, you keep all receipts for materials used in construction. This also shows that you have paid taxes. Then, you go to the instant tag place (again, here we need not go to the DMV or DNR) give them the physical dimensions of the boat and they will issue a capacity plate with engine size--if required.
They will also issue you a serial number which you must emboss into the hull permanently.

It is actually easier to register and obtain title to a homebuilt than a manufactured boat to which title has been lost.

I would not be surprised if your state is similar.

Re: questions about homemade boats

Do a quick check with your DMV or County Clerk for sure - in a weird happenstance here in TN, the state declared someone a "dealer" when trying to register their homebuilt boat. The poor guy wound up subject to a bunch of taxes if he wanted to register his little homebuilt boat...

For all the good stuff I brag on TN about, THIS was a crazy story.

I still haven't heard what the final resolution is on this gig.

Do you need a title for a non-motorized boat? Here you don't.

Here, home built is easy to title as long as it meets the guidelines, floatation included.

Or the DNR, that's who does boats in WI.

Thanks for the input, I was curious as I have read about folks having trouble getting titles for old boats with lost titles. So if I build from scratch I should be ok

I copy and pasted the info below in the quote box from another forum.
I would strongly suggest you call your local DMV and be sure you get the right information.
Every state is different, and you local area may have extra requirements.

In my State,WV, I had to take "most" of my material receips, along with two pictures of the Boat to my DMV.
1. Paid sales tax on materials {5%}
2. Paid Title Fee {$5.00}
3. Paid Registration Fee (fixed cost,based on when during 3 year term)- $15-$30
I later received in mail:
a} Title
b} Registration card with Hinn no.+ sticker placed inside Boat as well as "burned" into wood some where inside the boat
c} Hull no,s to be placed on sides of boat near bow

Sounds rather involved but was fairly easy and painless (depending on materials was less than $100)

TN is a state that doesn't title either ... bill of sale and you're good to go. BUT, that didn't work out with the little wood boat he built. Do your due diligence.

Re: questions about homemade boats

In WV their is one man who actually deals with any thing other than ordinary rubber stamp stuff. He takes care of any out of state titles or home built boat items and he is reasonable, its getting past the office drones who will reject any thing they don't want to be bothered with processing. Over the years I have had to deal with them. One of my other boats that had in state paper work took 3 try`s to get it retitled. I sent the paper work through the mail the first time and it was sent back for no reason. Second time was through a tittle service. The last try was I drove 70 miles to Charleston and walked into the main office and bang it took them 5 minutes to process it and ever thing was in order from the start. Then I asked to talk to a supervisor to get to the bottom of why it was rejected in the first place. I was asked to leave. Later I found out the one man was out on vacation and ever thing was being sent back so it wasn't sitting in some ones in box.

It is a lot better these days though with all of the new regional offices. My new boat only took 2 trips to get processed and 3 mouths to get the tittles because it was a KY boat and trailer, When they were processed I got temporary registrations and was able to start using the boat and trailer, and the real titles were bogged down again because the one guy had a back log. Welcome to WV.

how thick? found some diamond plate 1/16" would that be too heavy? a 4'x10' sheet on the bottom, smooth side down treads up for traction, and something thinner for the gunwhales:confused:

I don't know how thick. But that is the tougher material.

Who cares about how to title it, the guy wants to build a gocart-paddle-tunnel-jon-chainsaw-hydrofoil boat!

I need details and pics or at least a drawing, is it a gocart boat powered by a chainsaw, I must know, can;t believe everybody let that part go.

Rube Goldberg lives!:rockon:

If you look at the terms and conditions regarding the use of this forum, I'm sure you'll find that a thread about your build, with numerous pix, is required.

Simplest way is to deal with the state of Maine.........Done

DMV hassle the daylights out of you & steal loads of fees........Maine is a small 1 time fee. SEnd them a E MAIL.
Glad I did.:joyous:
