I am rebuilding a 2001 200HP Merc with no EFI.
Got a bad cylinder after I lost the oil feed to the engine.

Damages assesed upon ripping it apart. Bad piston, minor scoring to the one cylinder, oil drive gear needs replacing, and a few bits of broken down material here and there (from the piston or oil gear).

I noticed that there are about 4 bands or c-rings that buffer the crank shaft and keep stress from the bearings.
One of those was broken.
I was wondering if this is common or a result of the engine being run with no oil for a short time.
All compression was good except for my one bad cylinder.
should I be worried about crankshaft damage (warping ect?)
Anyone see one of these buggers break before.

thanks,greg

An over rev can cause the worm gear that powers the oil pump to pancake leading to all the other things you describe. There were no warning horns? No huge clouds of smoke at idle?

Greg,

Those rings around the crank are sealing rings. Basically they seal each crankcase chamber. They get broken when you pull it apart. Not expensive, so replace it.

Chris..........

Chris, Thanks, I see that those rings are sealing rings. I didn't realize that it may have broke when I pulled the crank case cover off. thanks. Does that happen often? What , do they snag of the case ?
G

Hondon,
The metal oil gear that drives the pump was ok. But the composite gear that is on the crankshaft was ate up bad.
No warning sound from the low oil warning device. I need to get that fixed before my boat gets wet again. I think the last owner may have screwed with it. (at my expense).

G

I have the same motor, 2001, 200 HP carbed. I bought it new and so far so good...610 hrs. I was talking to a local boat mec. the other day and he said that he has been seeing this motor come in with oil pump drive gear problems around 700 hrs. that can be really bad news for the motor. I asked him what he would do in my shoes, without hesitation he said " Pre Mix " . Just my 2 cents, but I am really concidering pre mixing.

...14 years, and over 2,000 hours on my 250hp. Oil pump system gone for 10 of those. Pre-mix is your friend. Oil pump bad. Very bad. JMHO.
