Question: Turning Motor with Prop?

I'm working on my 115HP Ficht motors and was wondering if there is any problem with manually turning the Motor over using the Prop (if possible).

It's difficult to turn the top flywheel.

Also,

I'm not sure if one of my motors is having a Bearing issue or a Gear Issue.

I was going to remove the Leg and was wondering if I can start the motor up using a hose to inject water into the water port to eliminate the Lower Gear as a problem.

I have an engine knocking sound and I'm not sure if it's the top or the bottom (sound traveling up the leg).

Thank you.

Take the plugs out and it will turn over alot easier. Yes, you can run it on a hose, just don't rev it up to much.

Re: Question: Turning Motor with Prop?

Thanks. I thought I read that in my service manual but couldn't find it again. Might have been somewhere else.

Mentioned removing the Leg to isolate a problem/noise - and just running the top end.

I figured as long as I had a good stream of water into the Water Port it should be fine.

As for the Prop. I know the motor must be turned one direction only.

I figured it was probably easier to turn the motor over down at the prop than at the limited area of the flywheel.

Any time you're going to turn the motor by turning the prop, disconnect or remove the sparkplugs! There's always that chance that you'll have enough compression and spark to take off some fingers.

Woooo..... Didn't even cross my mind. Seriously doubt that it would spark without key in ignition and power but good point to always be aware. I think I'll have a "friend" rotate it. ;-)))

It shouldn't. But, that's assuming everything is perfect. However, we all know things fail at the worst possible time, frequently. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks, I need to compare my two motors to see what the noise on the problem engine is. Either Bearings or Leg Issues. It's stiffer than the other.
