Question regarding printers.

Why doesn't a print job quit printing when you 'cancel' the job in the printer' queue?

It is aggravating as all get out. Every now and again I print something off of the internet and the printer spits out page after page of a line or part of a line of gibberish. If I cancel the print job it shows that it is deleting but the printer just keeps spitting out the paper.

To get it to stop I have to shut off the printer. This always results in about three pages that are in transit. When you turn the printer back on, you get a paper jam lite. You then have to pull out the toner cartridge, open the back door, carefully pull out all of the sheets in transit. It is a royal pain. If the printer would just finish a page, on delete command and stop it would not be so bad.

What's going on???

Laser printers have a memory so it's printing what's already in the buffer. When you cancel the job on the computer, it stops the computer from sending more data to the printer but the printer still prints the information it already has.

The printer might have a cancle button on it. That should stop it quicker. :)

You can also pull out the paper tray when you cancle the job ... then it won't use all those extra sheet. :)

Your printer is setup to spool

Which means that the computer prints to a memory buffer and then to the printer. It makes the computer run faster.

The printers have memory buffers and the computer has print spooler

You can go into your windows settings and click on that printer and somewhere in there there will be a spool option that you can turn off or on.

Turning the memory off on the printer is much harder you will have to see if you can even do that

Otherwise use PrintPreview to see what the document will look like and how many pages it will be rather than just hitting print

Later!

Got it, regarding the print spooling and printer memory.

JS, I'll look for that cancel button. It's a used HP 2100 TN Lasar that has a pretty sparse control panel. I'll have to check an online manual.

tomatolord, great idea about print preview. I never thought of using that when I printed off the internet, only when I created something in Word. I really do wonder what it would have shown when my last print job ran amok?

This problem only occurs when printing off the internet. I've told my wife, who sends her print requests over our little network, to either copy and paste her job to Word, or to highlight and 'print selection'. Both of those work well.

Re: Question regarding printers.

It is the windows print spooler as stated above. Disable it and it should behave a bit better.

My suggestion would be to yank the paper tray. It will finish printing the one page, but your good after that (may have to power cycle the printer in addition to canceling the job in Windows. Most printers are pretty stubborn after they get rolling.

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way Scooch. The minute you pull the paper tray the printer goes into paper jam mode. It just shuts down and will not restart till you clear the papers in transit. My best bet, I think, will be to find the cancel switch on the printer.
