Question regarding missing tilt rod pin

I just got a 2003 Yamaha 2-stroke 25 hp outboard. It starts fine and seems to run fine as well. The problem is that when the motor is shifted into forward and then the throttle opened up enough to get the boat on plane, there's a loud "banging" sound. This only happens when accelerating hard. At low speed, no problem. I noticed the tilt rod pin (used to set the tilt/trim of the motor) is missing. Any chance this could be the problem? It sounds like an "external" problem and not a problem coming from inside the engine.

I would think that could be your problem, you should have that pin. If you can't find a pin, you can use a bolt with a self locking nut.

Re: Question regarding missing tilt rod pin

Thanks for the info bbstacker1. I never thought of using a bolt. Figured I'd just order a new pin. Think I'll try the bolt first and if that solves the problem, I can decide whether or not to fork over the cash for a new pin. The only reason I can think of for buying a new pin vs the bolt is ease of changing trim, but once I figure out the best position for the bolt, I shouldn't need to move it again.

Re: Question regarding missing tilt rod pin

The banging noise is probably the leg of the motor banging into the transom.

A long bolt will work as a pin, but make sure that you use a lock washer or loctite on the nut. Check ebay for a used tilt pin.

Try to find a suitable Stainless Steel bolt with a washer and a Nyloc nut. Ace Hardware and similar carries a pretty good selection of Stainless Steel fasteners.

Re: Question regarding missing tilt rod pin

I boat in fresh water. Several years ago I bought my current rig and added a pin. I just used galvanized 3/8" (for my engine) all-thread and a zinc plated nut. Only rust currently is where I cut off the all-thread and not much of that. Agree the banging will go away when you install a pin. That's what it's for....to give your engine something to push against.

Texasmark, looks like I'll be going the allthread route myself. Can't find a 5/16 bolt over 6" long. I need a minimum of 7". I'll probably use the allthread while I try to locate a used pin.
