Question re lower unit drain plug

I'm changing the lower unit oil. The small magnet that sticks out of the plug and into the oil is loose. Is this normal? I noticed when I pulled the drain plug out and went to wipe the tiny metal specs off it the magnet came right out. It could be normal. It's just that I never tried to separate one.

Not normal.
Replace the plug before the magnet gets lost in the pan.

I agree, replace that plug before anymore use. you don't want that thing to get knocked into the gear set.

And if you have a LOT of those "tiny metal specks", you have a NOT "tiny" problem. You have serious lower unit gear wear.
