Question on timing and Shop manuals

Hey guys, Well, my motor is finally working the way it should (95' 28hp), It starts and runs smoothly and winds up fine in the tank. Before I take it out I need to time it, the starter says 30 degrees and there is a white mark on the flywheel at 30, I would assume you use a timing gun to align the white mark with the notches on the plastic piece below the flywheel? You adjust using the big screw on the throttle linkage?

Also, I am currently looking for a service manual so I can stop asking a ton of easily answered questions here. Are the seloc versions worth having? I can find these with no trouble but The actual Johnson versions are harder to come by, anyone have a link?

Thanks again guys..

Re: Question on timing and Shop manuals

The iboats store has manuals and steer clear of Clymer/Seloc, they cover too many models and don't give enough detail to be of much use.

Just click on the store icon at the top port of the page.

Can't help with the timing, totally different than mine.

The timing adjustment screw is on the starter bracket just behind the starter on that motor. Yes, 30* at WOT

Alright, so at idle the motor should be at a different timing? Should I time it with a load (ie at a lake while running or can I simply open it up in neutral in a tub? I would assume the timing changes as you increase throttle.

Re: Question on timing and Shop manuals

The timing should be done in a tank big enough to let it run at WOT with minimal slippage. NEVER run it WOT in nuetral. Trying to set the timing with the boat on plane would be dangerous, I do not recommend that. There is no idle timing per se'. The idle timing is determined by the idle adjustment.

I fully recommend the Joe Reeves method of setting the fully advanced timing. Its in the FAQ.

I think I can handle that timing method, but a few questions first, I assume all you need to set the timing is the cranking power of the starter? And the full advance stop, where is this located? I would assume it would be near the plastic piece that has the timing marks?
