I tried to test lights last night with boat out of water on muffs. So, the unit was in neutral the whole time. Result: No lights in front (green/red light not lit up) and stern light also nonexistant. Lights did not appear to work at all.

Question: Do I have to be in forward or reverse for these lights to go on?

Any other elaboration on the subject of running lights is also welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Light operation should be independant of motor operation.

You might want to check out the Electronics part of the iboats forum.

Check out the BoatSafe site for full instruction.

Re: question on running lights

The switch controlling the lights has three positions: NAV (for navigation) and ANC (for anchor) and OFF. At anchor only the stern light should be on. When the boat is moving both the bow and stern lights should work. They have nothing to do with the engine running or whether it is in gear or not. Check the bulbs, the fuse, the switch, and the wiring.

One switch for both nav and anchor is not always the case. Some may be wired through two seperate switches

Re: question on running lights

Thanks for setting me straight. Lost one of the bulbs (worked earlier this year?) and replaced it. I think the running lights are working, but not the anchor light.

It appears in my situation that the anchor and nav lights are on the same pull switch. If I pull it out to the first detent, though, what I assume to be the anchor light (stern light) does not come on. However, if I pull the switch out to the second detent, I get both the stern and bow lights. Shouldn't the stern light come on when the switch is pulled out to the first stop?

Thanks again.

Navagation and anchor lights should work with the key in the OFF position.

The anchor light should be a 360 degree viewable light.

Yes,,,Maybe!!!!

What size boat are we talking about?

Light configureations differ on type and size boat.

Yes, the anchor light should be able to be turned on separately. Whether thats the first detent or second is of no consequence. It all depends on how the switch is wired. If both lights work in the NAV position, there is a wiring problem at the switch or a bad switch.

Upinsmoke,

Didn't you mean if both lights work in the ANCHOR position you have a problem?

Also, I have had three boats that had only one position for lights. Many are made without an Anchor position on the switch. Not good, but definitely out there. The only way I can have the Anchor light on alone is by pulling the wires or bulbs to the bow lights . . .

Re: question on running lights

I just got around to replacing the missing rear receptical on my boat and the switch is wired so that the bow light comes on instead of the rear when the switch is in the anchor position  I should be able to just swap the two leads at the switch but this kind of stuff has be SOP for this boat. 1/8" holes drilled through the bottom from the inside , etc. Prior owners musta been stoopid.

Re: question on running lights

Didn't you say that both lights work if the switch is pulled out all the way? If thats true, thats the NAV position. The first detent then is the ANC position and only the stern light should be on. But then you apparently solved the problem so this is a moot point eh?
