Question on leaf springs......

Several years ago I was looking for a new trailer for my 18' Campion Cuddy Cabin, which was mounted on a single axel trailer with out brakes. I found a tandem trailer, with brakes, returned by the original buyer after 6 weeks of use and traded it in on a new galvanized one.

It was great to get it, as I was able to get for half of the original cost.

My problem is, with the tandem wheels, there is not much spring action due to four sets of leaf springs and not two.

I towed my boat to mainland Mexico and upon returning home, the bulk head had to be refastened, as the roads down there aren't the best and caused the bulkhead to come loose, due to the lack spring action.

I was wondering if anyone has removed the center leaf from the leaf spring to attain a softer ride. It has three leaves, the main on top, the curved center one and the fairly flat one on the bottom. I want to remove the center spring.
I'm sure I would still be in the gross weight limit of the trailer, as it has a 3500 lb. capacity rating, which is an overkill for my boat.

I checked a couple of sites for diffrent springs, but the only replacement springs of that style were three leaf.

 ...Bob in Calif...

Bob,

I suspect the real reason that you are not getting much spring action is because the trailer has too high of a capacity for your boat.

Four Winns tried a monoleaf suspension on some of their trailers. It was disastrous for them.

The best solution, in my mind, is to find out just how much over capacity you have. Once known, a good trailer shop can match springs (3 leaf) to your actual weight.

Bob,

Paragod makes an excellent suggestion. I'd forgotten about those.

Sometimes having less pressure in your tires can help soften the ride. There is a limit to how soft you can go. Try 5 lbs. less in each tire to see if you notice a difference.

Bob in Calif
Well I removed one leaf spring on the trailer for my 14 foot Aluminum and it worked just fine. I strongly disagree with lowering air pressure in tires. This is the leading cause to Blow out due to heat. Ford Explorer tried lower air pressure and it led to roll overs.

You can also change to lighter springs.
