Question on installing a Marine Radio

I got a deal on two nice Marine radios.
My Gulfstream already has an antenna without the long whip--mounted on the bow. I need to add a whip. I am looking at what truckers use as a whip antenna.

My Renken will need an antenna and mount. I have a neighbor who owns a trucking company. He tells me the installation is the same as would be on a fiberglass cab big rig.

He told me to permanently mount an antenna like what is on the Gulfstream--- on the Renken I/O. Ok, that much seems simple. Get a permanent mount antenna, mount it in front of the driver on the bow somewhere. Run the cable back to the radio which will be mounted on the passenger side below the glove box.

So if I have this correct, the grounding will be to the body of the radio, and back to the battery on the boat near the engine/stern drive.

Right? I bought a Uniden and a Standard Eclipse. I need a hand held unit for shore. Cell service at the lake is non existent. When we go out we usually take all three of my boats. The kids and grandkids use two of the inboards I play on the old Glasspar with a 100hp outboard.

Mount it on the port side, on the side deck right next to the radio. That'll simplify the installation procedure. Use a lay down mount with an 8' whip. Marine FM is line of sight, so you'll want the tallest antenna you can get.

The antenna does not need a separate ground.

Remember you might be able to talk to each other, but any other boats would have to be close to have reception. Hand helds have limited range.

Antennas all about the same in regards to Marine Radios vs CB's? The radios are 25 watts too. There is a pretty good sized truck stop over the hill--if I hit the truck stop which stocks a good deal of CB stuff, can I use the antennas on my boats?

1. No, you cannot use a CB antenna. CB is a very different set of frequencies.

2. You cannot legally transmit with a hand-held marine VHF radio from shore. How big is the lake? You might be able to get by with FRS radios or evenactual CB radios.
