Hey,
You guys have been very helpful with the instructions for changing the water pump on my 170 hp. I am hoping to save major $$ by doing it myself, so thanks.

I got all the info to start but I have a question. Cheifmike and Trent sent me instructions that say to loosen the front motor mount so you can raise the front (forward) end of the motor up. This will make it possible to get the rotor(?) off. My question is how high should you try to raise it? We are planning on using a hoist but wanted to make sure we don't raise it and damage anything. Thanks again!

Raise it enough to use a wheel puller. The wheel puller has to clear, that should work fine.

Depending on the boat design it may only have to be raised a few inches or many inches.

Bob

Frog, before you go lifting engine see if you can attach and use puller as things are. All you need is about an inch or two clearance.

Be sure to check for wear on the cam which the seals ride on. If you have a cut in the sealing surface you can press the outer seal a 1/16 of a inch or so lower in the aluminum housing to grab a new seal on the cam, Make sure you dont press it over the weep hole.
