Question on 98 Johnson Fast Track Power Trim Unit

I have a 98 fast track powerlift that appears to be leaking between the electric motor and the pump and manifold housing. I assume that the o-ring needs to be changed. Do I really need to remove the engine before I pull off the electric motor? The Clymer book says too but can't I just brace the motor up?

Tilt the motor up and use the lock on the stb. side to hold it. Then just remove the upper pin from the tilt ram and let the whole unit tilt toward you as you retract the tilt ram. With a swivel socket (3/8") and a 6" extension you can reach the bolts that hold the trim motor on, then remove the motor to replace the oring. If you are leaking elsewhere on the trim system, you must buy the $45 seal kit.

Re: Question on 98 Johnson Fast Track Power Trim Unit

Hey Seahorse, <br />Thanks for the help. I know the boat was used about 12 times over the past 3 years. Do the o-rings dry rot if the motor sits too long? I didn't notice the leak until it got warmer out and I hit a submerged pile which lifted the motor. When I raise and lower the engine, nothing squirts out like it is a pressure issue, just a slow leak overnight which seems to be coming from in between the electric motor and the manifold/pump. Sound like a bad o=ring? No cracks in the manifold or anything and I don't know if it leaked in warm weather b/c I hit the pile on the first really warm day. Thanks for your help!
