We have a Whirlpool Washing Machine (circa 1988 )
that frequently skips it's slow wash cycle. This occurs regardless of the selected wash style, ie, permanent press, regular or knits.

The unit goes thru the fast wash, then would normally go thru a longer, slower wash. Instead, the timer keeps driving thru the period but the tub just sits idle until it comes up to the drain and rinse cycles. Every now and again it will do the slow wash.

I assumed that the problem was in the complex timer/switch assembly, so took a $100 gamble and lost. It did not remedy the problem.

What would be the likely component that would tell the tub to go thru the slow wash cycle?

In the bottom of the machine there should be a service pack drawing

It has a picture of all the cams on the timer and the circut each one follows to make that function run

You would need to flow the flow of that cam to see what is not runing

:) i did the same wasted 100 dollars and then bought a new machine as the repiar was costing more than the new machine at that point

don't want to mislead here,as my problem was with a Maytag, but very similar.

local appliance parts store described the mechanism for the motor as being on a track,so it actually moves for different cycles.

opened the front lower panel and saw what he meant.lubed it up,got it moving (delicately, with a crowbar) and got a couple more years out of it.

Re: Question for Washing Machine Repair Gurus.

I have issues with an amana washing machine. Had the Maytag repairman in to look at it along with 2 other appliances. He said it isn't worth repairing. I bought it new in 97. They are built to fail. The GE guy told me once that these things are built to last about 6 years. I understand that Maytag has been bought out by Whirlpool. I don't think there is an appliance company that builds a really good machine anymore. My Maytag electric range is 3 years old and the convect fan has gone out twice. The company just blew me off when I called Maytag to complain. It is out of warranty. What do you want us to do was what they said.:|

It sounds like you have had almost 20 good years with it and may be that you'll have to get a new one.

Some good hints guys. Thanks. I won't write it off till I give it another go.

These parts places are kind of maddening. Many advertise that the are DIY friendly. Trouble is, they never seem to know anything. They would gladly send a repair man out though!
