Question for Roscoe!

Hey Roscoe long time no talk, or ask I should say !! I have a really simple question for you......the more I read about prop size, pitch, diameter etc the more I get confused. For some reason I have a mental block with this subject. I have a 18 foot Sea Nymph with a 40 John on it I currently have a 11 3/4 X 17 on it now. In the boat when I got it there is also a 12.5X13 prop in there as a spare.

My question is.... if I was to put the 12.5X13 on what difference should I expect? I know this is such a dumb question but again I am an idiot when it comes to this subject.! As always thank you in advance, Stuart ( I have posted in the Johnson/Evinrude Forum to find out what my WOT should be I know that factors in)

Re: Question for Roscoe!

I don't mean to butt in but::
To keep it simple the higher the pitch "17" the less power but better speed assuming not too much pitch.
Lower pitch "13" more power less speed. This is a general statement based on the ability of the motor to reach its max rpm.
17" pitch sounds pretty high for a 40 on a boat that big.
Is it possible that is an 11"I would think a 17" prop would be pretty sluggish on that boat. If it is a 17 the 13 would give much better hole shot.
You would surely get much better prop help in the prop forum.

Re: Question for Roscoe!

LOL I have been on Ibaots for quite a while and never even saw a prop forum LOL That is my bad, and if I broke a rule I am sorry ! I have always had really good luck with Roscoes advice when I ran a Force. Thanks for the expert advice..I verified the numbers and it is a 17...This boat came from a guy who lacked in the careing department, so I have tried looking this up and calling Lowe ( who as you know bought out Sea Nymph) I guess it is going to be a trial and error session LOL Thanks again !!

Going to the 13 pitch, better hole shot, and expect WOT rpm to increase by 600 rpm.

Nope my whole clan is from Bucks county PA..LOL I trace my family back to my great Grandfather in County Cork Ireland. 1000 islands are? if so I am planning a trip there with my wife next summer for some fishing fun.

We have a place in the 1000 islands.Don't get up there much any more but some of the best fishing in the river is in Eel Bay out in front of our place. There is a trench
out in the middle and fishing along the trench has always been excellent. It has been years but last time we fished the area we got everything from Rock Bass to Walleye.Study your charts as there are 4 or 5 shoals out there.
There is also the best antique boat museum in the world in Clayton NY.You can get there by boat or car.

Re: Question for Roscoe!

Excellent, thanks for the info, all sounds like a trip for us. 18' Sea Nymph deep V with 40hp on it should be good for up there? It has VHF and depth and radar....Set up big but trailers small always been the way I like it LOL
