I have a 2002 200 HPDI Yamaha. When last years hurricanes hit, house was trashed, wife had baby and to make a long story short, we just moved back into the house and I need to start my motor after sitting for 10 months. Any suggestions?

Re: Question for Rodbolt

fire it up and hope for the best
but I would drain the vapor seperator and the fuel system and start with fresh gasoline. dont try to run that old gas. use a fully charged battery. when you drain the VST make sure you refill it prior to attempting to start it. also after refilling the VST turn the key on and listen closely for the medium pressure pump to whine for 2-5 seconds. the biggest failure of an HPDI sitting is the pump will lock up in the VST. if it whines its most likly ok. you may also wish to catch up on any O2 senor maint and cooling system maint before placing it back in operation. never start it without full water pressure to the flush muffs. dont even bump it off for a bit.

Re: Question for Rodbolt

We finally were able to come up for air with the house repairs and the baby being sick. Today I went and picked up the boat in an attempt to try and start. I followed your advice by draining the fuel and then replacing with fresh (Using a 6 gallon portable tank). I drained the fuel out of the VST and then pumped the new fuel, mixed with ring free, in and hoped for the best. Motor initially fired then died, changed all plugs to my back-up set and that did not do any good. The 2-5 second whine you told me about is not happening, so I think the fuel pump in the VST is frozen. I measured fuel pump input and have 12.2 volts on the hot side. I have tried tapping the housing with a leather mallet and thus far have not been successful. I do have the factory service manual, so I do have directions on how to replace the fuel pump.

My question, is there anyway to free up the pump? With just rebuilding the house and the baby being sick, I would like to try and fix myself and not take it to dealer.

Thanks!!!

Re: Question for Rodbolt

remove the pump. buy a can of pringles and eat them. buy a can of yamaha combustion chamber cleaner. spray the enire contents into the now empty pringles can and drop the pump in the can,
let it soak overnight.
how hook up the blue lead to the neg batt term. while hooking the red lead to the positive tap the pump housing, dont run the pump long dry and if it does not whine almost immediatly dissconnect one of the leads. if the pump rotor is stuck and you continue to apply voltage it will finnish off a 700 dollar pump.
some folks have had sucess applying reverse current, wont hurt. others, myself included, have as a last resort hit it with 24V momentarily.
if its locked its locked so I will get progressivly more aggressive until I say enough and the customer gets to buy a pump.
the pump is removable by removing the 3 bolts holding the VST to the block and the screws holding the tank to the upper body. remove as many tank to body screws as possible before removing the 3 VST to block bolts.
pay careful attention to the spacer coller and oring at the pump outlet at dissasembly and reassembly.

Re: Question for Rodbolt

a quick onboard test is turn the key on, remove the blue pump wire and dissconect the bullet connector, ground the pump side of the blue wire to the block. the red side should always be 12V when the key is on, pump run is determined by the ECU making the ground in the ECU.

Re: Question for Rodbolt

Rodbolt,
Thanks for all the help! I took your advice on using the Yamaha combustion chamber cleaner, but went about it a slightly different way than you suggested. I removed the drain plug from the VST and inserted the combustion chamber cleaner nozzle into the drain hole. I sealed the hole and nozzle with "Dux seal", and then emptied the contents of one can into the VST. I reinserted the plug and left it alone for 3 days. I removed the plug, drained the cleaner out, and then filled and flushed the VST with fresh gas three times. I turned the key on and the pump gave that familiar whine! I took the boat out and idled for at least 30 minutes on fresh gas and ring free. The motor runs like a top!

Thank you very much for your advice!
