I have a 1999 BF30A tiller with serial#BAWL-1000137. This motor seems too run inconsistent when it is hot. If I run at wide open throttle for 5 minutes and stop to troll motor will idle faster than normal for about 5 minutes. Also seems very inconsistent when hot outside say in the upper 80's.Motor will idle aright some times it seems to get in a groove until you have to speed up a little then when you drop back to idle it might not idle right for a while again and sometimes might just quit. I had it to Honda dealer they had to clean one of the carbs but it is still not right.

Re: Question for Honda experts

C-did this engine sit more than a couple weeks without running? Honda is notorious for having very small carb jets that gum up if not run almost weekly.also the jets are made with a "step" inside making them almost impossible to clean...next step-try new jets

Does it have more than 1 carb? My 90 runs a little similiar when mt carbs need syncing. That is, if I run at cruise for 15 min plus then go to idle, I can hear a difference in how smooth it is at idel. just a guess.

Re: Question for Honda experts

This motor has three carbs and they were just synced by a honda dealer 3 weeks ago. I will not take it back to dealer because they took 5 weeks to repair last time.

There is no point in cleaning just one carb on this engine as the entire intake mani should be removed to do the job right.Do you have a water separator fuel filter?.What did that dealer say was the outcome of a fuel sample?

Hondon, the dealer did not mention that they took a fuel sample. They told me that they had the carb apart twice before they found dirt in jet. Said it was probably old fuel that cause varnish deposit.I have since installed water seperating filter.Dealer never mentioned puting one on.

So where do you want to go from here? That carb rebuild and sync process is much to complicated and concise to walk you throgh here.Plus you will need the guages to sync this thing anyway. How are things back there ? I grew up down the highway near Fairmont.

Re: Question for Honda experts

Hondon, I have a Honda oem manual and a set of mercury carb gauges. I went thru the carbs this past week end. Cleaned everything twice went thru 2 cans of carb cleaner. I checked the jets with a good magnifing glass. No cracks or dirt that I could see in the tubes. It seems to me the floats were set a little high. My manual says .600 and mine were at .500. I adjusted floats and installed new gaskets and o-rings. I live in Rochester but motor is at my cabin up north. I will take carbs up there in a couple weeks install them resync and let you know how I come out.By the way things are fine here.

Re: Question for Honda experts

I installed my rebuilt carbs this past weekend. While adjusting carbs I found that the top cab does not change when the mixture screw is turned in or out. The other two carbs change if you get 1/2 turn away from two turns out. Top carb you can turn srew in until it bottoms and the idle speed does not change. My Honda dealer went through that carb two times and I went through it very slowly and checked every thing twice with a magnifying glass. I think there must be something in the fine little passages in the carb body itself that lead to the air bleed screw. I soaked carb with carb cleaner and blew out with compressed air when I went through it. Would it be best just to replace this carb with a new one.
