Help.....This thursday I pick up my 23 ft Seaswirl, walk around. Boat and trailer, 5,000lbs.max. I need to bring it to northern mich, where it will be kept at my cabin, this is a one time trip, from that point it will be three miles to the boatlaunch. My concern is the 350 miles up north, it is a two wheel drive Explorer with heavy duty trans cooler. Am I crazy or will this Ford do the job........???

Trailer has brakes, right? Is it within the maximum towing capacity per your Explorer owner's manual? If so it'll do it.

Stay out of overdrive! Drive carefully and it will be an OK trip but you are at the limit.

You shouldn't have a problem. My boat is a little smaller (4100 lbs), but my '98 V6 SOHC Explorer has no problem. We've made a few trips from northern Indiana to the Charlevoix area without a problem. You might run into a few more hills if you are going to the UP, but you should be okay. Check you hubs and breaks before you go.

Also, check your tire pressures. I don't mean an eyeball and a kick.

Check them with a guage and set them to the max pressure listed on the sidewall-COLD.

You probably know this already, but someone should say it anyway, just to be thorough: we're assuming your truck is in good mechanical condition, brakes, suspension, front end, the engine hasn't been running hot, proper frame-mounted hitch, etc. Also check the condition of the trailer hubs & brakes. Don't forget the safety chains!

congrats on the new boat, is it your first?
