Basscat,<br /><br />I have a 77 85HP. My Tach is set at 6P. There has been alot of debate around here on where to set it. WOT I am getting 5K. Sounds like it is turning a bit faster than that. Could you please post what you were getting before and after switching settings. You may have already done this, I must have missed it. I would like to verify before buying a new tach. My tach doesnt have a 4P setting. Although it does have a 2, 3, and 4cyl settings. No name brand on it.

I had an off brand tach in my boat too. I dont recall what it was reading at WOT. I then purchased a new OMC tach and I was told to set it on 6P for my 85hp Johnson, which was wrong. I was turning 5300 rpms at WOT, but like you I knew it was turning faster than that. I then figured out that my stator had 8 poles and that I should have it set on 4P. Now I am reading 6100 rpms which is correct. If you are going to replace your tach I recommend to buy an OMC tach.<br />You get what you pay for.
