Question- Do flame arrestors filter out dirt.

I know I know, don't think like it is a car. But seriously it does not seem to stop dirt from getting in the engine. Why would we not use a good air filter.

Too little airborne dirt out on the water, to introduce another potential engine problem (clogged air filter element from getting wet, etc).

However...since there are numerous posts about people finding their flame arrestors dirty enough to benefit from cleaning, they must do some dirt filtration!

You could get a foam type filter to go around the flame arrestor from a auto parts store.

What happens when your foam air cleaner gets soaked with fuel or oil??? Might burn pretty easily. Is there that much dirt over the water where you boat to worry about it?

I think that was my question. There must not be that much dirt on the lake.

I dont agree with this for the reasons 45Auto pointed out.

There is not enough dust in the water to require a foam air cleaner.

Re: Question- Do flame arrestors filter out dirt.

Not to mention the dirt we're talking about is less than a MM in diameter, since the rings of the flame arrestor are spaced at that interval. Even then, the less than 1mm debris goes directly into the combustion chamber, which likely means it would never even touch anything (remain airborn) before getting pumped out the exhaust. And unless you are throwing dirt at it, any sub 1mm particles will likely be flaoting in the air to begin with, so that means it is proably non-mineral and will get burned up on ignition (since it will become fuel soaked as it enters).

So, nope, I don't see any need for a filter on the water.

Just for clarification, it is actually the small stuff that is the biggest concern ^^^^ polishes cylinder walls and fast (bad).

Still no need, because there is no dust on the water. Just look at the rest of your engine ;) Easiest way to gain comfort is to try and name a manufacturer that supplies an air cleaner on a marine engine . . .
