I have a SRV 225 cuddy and busted a trim tab this summer. What I was wondering is are they really needed? Did this boat come with the orginally?

This is my very first boat so be gental.

Here is the link for the boat - http://www.searay.com/Archives_Manuals/Sea_Ray_Archives/1982/Full%20Brochure%20PDF/1982%20Sea%20Ray%20Brochure.pdf

Also I can not find any info about this boat except the info above (which isn't much) and was wondering what the towing weight of the boat is, or where I can find this info.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Re: Question about trim tabs

Can we assume your boat is an 82' 225?

I will tell you that an outdrive fin will get you on plane in no time, but the advantage to my tabs mainly comes in when weight transfers from side to side.

They keep her nice and level when guests are restless.....

Re: Question about trim tabs

most of the vintage sea rays did come with bennet trim tabs installed
sea ray used there own spec on the size so they are a little different than stock bennet. shorter cylinders and some times smaller plane area for the size of boat.
do you need them?
i would say yes. the only time i use mine are to level side to side after i'm on plane and as such, to compensate for changes in load moving in boat (passengers)
i allso like to put them both down when traveling in no wake zones and going slow. they help take some of the wig wag out
they can also help you get on plane quicker with a heavy load or if your low on power

go to this web sight and you will find out all you need to know. there is a phone number there and you can call if yo still have questions or need parts. these are great people to work with.

Re: Question about trim tabs

Thanks for the answers. The site really help and I'll be giving them a call and hopefully the have some good used ones.

I hope I can ask this here but where is a good place to get used boat parts? Don't say ebay either because they don't have much "used".

There must be a good boat graveyard somewhere.

Thanks again for everything and I love the forum so far.

Re: Question about trim tabs

trim tabs are there, to take you up on plane and to direct you from point a" to b". If one is out, you end up making a large arch to get where you are going. The good one in the water pulls you away from where you want to go. higher speeds makes things problematic. The idea was to make an unstable boat stable at speed. Seems to work with smaller boats that have FLY BRIDGES!

I am sorry, but this makes no sense to me at all. If I had one tab out I can still steer my boat. Small boats with Flybridges? What about big boats without? . . .
