Question about towing a TN trailer into GA

I can't seem to find out any real information about the plate requirements (or necessity) when pulling a trailer from TN into GA. I've got a 14' jon boat that I want to take with me on a trip to GA, but can't find out if I need a plate before I go. I've read that Tennessee has an agreement with surrounding states to honor their law, but I don't want to take a chance of getting a ticket if that's not true. (In TN, you don't have to register a trailer under a certain length and mine falls well under that length). Has anyone ever pulled their boat from TN to GA? What did you do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The trailer has never been registered in TN, and after talking with our county clerk, it's going to be a nightmare to get a tag for it.

As long as the boat is registered in TN and the tow rig is plated in TN, I don't see a problem.

If it makes you rest easier, print out a copy of the law about the length of the trailer and plate requirements and keep it with you.

The OP stated the trailer is not required to be registered in Tennessee. We can all speculate that you'll be fine, and you most likely will be. However, the only way to be sure is call the GHP. All it will cost you is a little time.

Quick follow-up on my original post. Turns out that the person I talked to at the clerk's office didn't really know (or understand) what I was asking. I called the clerk's office again today and it looks like it's going to be fairly easy to get a tag for the trailer. Basically just the VIN, 2 proofs of residency, and the boat registration. Thanks for the advice though. I won't have anything to worry about if I get a tag.

I wouldn't go to the trouble of taging it. Just print a copy of the law and carry it with you. Most law enforcement here are reasonable and will probably never bother you. Have a safe trip!
