Question about summerizing with a drained block

I got to thinking last night about this for when the spring comes around and its time to summerize the boat and run it the first time. Say you hook up muffs and run it. The water temp sensor is measuring the temp of the water coming from the block up into the thermo housing correct? If the block was drained and the thermostat is closed because the engine is cold, how does water enter the block to circulate? How can the thermostat open if there's no water to heat up and open it?

the thermostat should let some air pass through so that the block can fill, etc. happens all the time.

Oh ok, so it's never COMPLETELY closed? I assumed it was basically sealed tight until it warms up enough to start to open.

Re: Question about summerizing with a drained block

The block will fill up, just from the pressure from the raw water pump. The thermostats usually pass air with no problem, some even have a small hole drilled in the outer area (if there is room) to let air pass.

When the thermostat is closed, it may not let water circulate, but there is a big difference in water circulating and air passing through.

It's also never been a problem since these things started. You should probably find something else to worry about till spring. ;)

Now THAT I can do! Thanks guys, just wanted to make sure there was nothing that is supposed to be done before firing up.

there is something to do prior to starting up. be sure the drain plugs are in and the petcocks are closed... ;)

check out this flow chart that's for my engine. there is water flowing to the block when cold. i would think yours would be similar. mine (for my '75 L6 engine) is probably one of the more simpler and straight fwd to understand.
