Question about speedometer on my 1978 Starcraft Boat W 115 HP Johnson

Hello I have a question about the speedometer on my new boat, at the back of the boat where the tube for the speedometer comes out it ends at the transom on the boat, and doesn't connect to anything on the transom, is this normal or is a peice of my speedometer missing?

On newer engines the speedo pickup is in the lower unit of the engine. Look for a hose barb on the lower unit near where the hose ends.

Ok thanks, it is an older motor (1979), so I probably need the peto tube
