I have a 1995 17.5 ft Crestliner with a remanufactured 3.0 jasper engine SX drive that was installed last year to replace a cracked motor. It idles pretty good, planes out good with the smart tabs and pures right along at a maximum speed of 32 mph, WOT is about 3500 RPMS with a 17 pitch prop. The old engine would do about 45 so this new engine is much weaker.

My question is what could have they done wrong in building this engine that would cause it to be so much weaker? Also i'm assuming it is the engine because everything else is the same and it runs good with the exception of top end speed.

I'd be checking all the basics.. fuel supply first- looking for restriction.
Fuel pump, filter etc.
Compression test the engine.
Check Timing.

Good suggestion, I'll start with the fuel restrictions. I know where one of the filters is, it's part of the fuel pump however are there any other filters in my system that I should check?

I think that's it on those - just the 1 filter....anti siphon valve on the fuel tank could be causing problems... might be a screen on the pickup in the tank too...
Did the boat sit for awhile while the engine was dead... maybe a bunch of rust and junk developed in the fuel tank.

I only took it out twice in the ealy spring with the cracked block and it ran like a raped ape before it overheated. Then it sat until March before it went in for the replacement, I got it back in april of last year and it's been underpowered ever since.

So it sat about a year.

Re: Question about replacement volvo penta 3.0

I bought the Jasper remanufactured engine and had them install it (local marina). I don't have a 1000 bucks it's going to take for them to pull it out and send it back, thats the problem. Also the Mechanic said that the engine is running fine, which it is except for top speed.

Are you sure the throttle
opens full?
Could be a simple cable misadjustment.
Engine off, push throttle full,
look down throat of carb and check
butterfly is wide open.

Re: Question about replacement volvo penta 3.0

Yea, throttle is all the way open, goes right to the stopper. Butterfly, I'll check that. Ok just got back, yea that opens all the way up.

Now I only took it out twice prior to the new engine but i'm pretty sure it hit 45mph, the original owner also said he's had it up to 50mph which I doubt but it was close to what I was doing. So i'm assuming 32mph based on my GPS in a 17.5 ft alluminum boat should go about 45mph with 140hp right?

Not sure how much my boat actually weighs though..

There is one other thing that I noticed with this motor vs the old. The old motor right off the bat would tip or twist the boat some with just a little gas like it had some serious tourque, it was also more sensative in throttle response. This new motor doesn't do that all.

I'll take it to a different Marina and have them check everything and report back with what they find if anybody is interested.

I'd get a timing light on it right quick.

Re: Question about replacement volvo penta 3.0

There is a lot of things other than something in the long block that could be causing the problem.
Basically you are about 1000 to 1300 rpm low on WOT rpm.
Time to start eliminating things that could cause it.
You obviously haven't taken the boat out very many times, do you know how to trim the drive properly. It not just a trim it down and go, if you did that you wouldn't get your top rpm for sure.
Here is a list of possibilities, time to start eliminating them one by one. And don't just assume something is good because it worked before.
Such things as vacuum gauges, compression gauge, fuel pressure gauge, timing lite (and shunt) and a service manual are all going to be necessary to check it out properly.
This is one reason I don't like using remanned or eeven new "Aftermarket" engines. The warranty, if needed, is non existant or very expensive to use, as in your case.
